http://www.worldharmonyrun.org/ - Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace and World Harmony Runs - this video take a look back at some of the early highlights. More background at www.worldharmonyrun.org/about/history/history_2011/preface.
Founding Executive Director, speaks about early days and requesting support from his famous friends...Shotahota, Narada, Mushigun "I said to them , I need all of you... This is big. I Need all of you to gather around behind us.
It began in May 1986 when Sri Chinmoy asked, while we were walking through the hallowed halls of the United Nations, if I could organize a global Peace Run. The United Nations had proclaimed 1986 the International Year of Peace, and Sri Chinmoy wanted to offer a heartfelt and sincere expression of peace on a global scale. The World Trade Center set the backdrop for the opening ceremony, broadcast live on NBC-TV's The Today Show.. On April 27, 1987, five minutes of global television time was dedicated for the inaugural Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run. Grammy Award-winning record producer Narada Michael Walden composed a theme song, "Oneness-Home Peace Run," that captured the spirit of the initiative and was featured on TV broadcasts about the Peace Run. (listen at: http://www.worldharmonyrun.org/friend...). By opening day, word about the Run had spread far and wide. We had strong support from Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the UN Secretary-General, celebrities Carl Lewis, Clarence Clemons and Narada Michael Walden, and thousands of elected officials who had welcomed Sri Chinmoy's vision for the Run. That year runners covered 27,000 miles in 44 nations. We were featured in a nationally broadcast PBS-TV special in the US, on a one-hour MTV special, and in countless newspaper articles.

Sri Chinmoy: " I had a dream and the name of that dream is Peace Run. Some dreams bloom and blossom, while some dreams remain unmanifested....This peace run which we call now Harmony Run ...is an ever blossoming dream". Sri Chinmoy words for WHR theme song: "Run, Run, Run Run, Run Run, World Harmony Run. We are the Oneness and Fullness of tomorrow's sun." (listen at http://www.worldharmonyrun.org/song)
Shotahota Carl Lewis (Nine-Time Olympic Gold Medalist) : "Looking back now I think Guru (Sri Chinmoy) saw children, from day one. Because those are the pictures that stand out. The kids holding the torch. It means something so special. To take something into these kids communities and to let them touch something that they think is so special, inspires them. And I think Guru saw that from day one. He saw that is why the torch was important, and fire was important and kids was important. A lot of the kids that were 9, 10 , 11 years old are now in their thirties. They are telling their kids , lets go see the torch."
Phaedra Rosario, Peace Runner : "As you are running and people are beeping their horns and giving you the peace sign out the window --- It is like... you are standing on top of a mountain..."
Zambian Students shown: "A nation without cooperation is doomed. No man is an island. Together we can make it. We are the oneness and fullness of tomorrow's sun. Harmony can be attained, not from the bullets but through the ballots. Peace can be gained not by the power of the gun.
The hour has come , to bring peace and cooperation. I keep asking myself this question: "Who will bring about peace?" - Is it Nelson Mandela? (former South African President?... NO. -Is it Barack Obama? (President of USA) .....NO.; - Is it Ban-Ki-moon? ( Secretary-General, United Nations) ....NO. Bothers and Sisters, Yes, The hour has come, harmony begins with me, harmony begins with You!"
Sri Chinmoy speaks about the run: "this Peace Run is the very beginning of something infinitely greater than what we ever imagine. Not only unique, but unprecedented. This peace run is the very, very beginning of something humanity will forever and forever treasure. Something that Mother Earth will forever and forever treasure."
