@Jalt18 Also the fact that it's a kid shooting at Stransky. a kid who can't can't operate his weapon properly shooting at an officer who can't operate his weapon. Crazy! Only thing I'm not clear about, is the kid supposed to be the kid from early who has somehow survived?

@Jalt18 You may be right, I think not, I think you did not feel during the movie he got scared every time hearing the voice of artillery but other men not, means he cannot face war ,the other thing is this that in the beginning of the movie Stransky said Steiner kill him but in the end I think boy killed Stransky. Movie gives lesson that good people don't feel fear and they always pass happy life.

I think it is a combination: crazy and fucked up situation with Stransky situation. Steiner just won't fight anymore; it is finished... all is finished and nothing makes sence anymore.

Guys, he's laughing at Stransky because he's an officer and he doesn't even know how to reload his weapon. Poor basic fieldcraft. In Steiner's situation(in life and the war and even that specific moment all combined), its like working with a guy like Stransky, your so fucked that its funny! You either gotta laugh or cry. Might as well laugh.

@toby4700 He's not going crazy, hes just laughing at how rediculous the people are who are supposed to be properly utilizing resources and manpower.
