@tennochi28 I'm sorry, but you are wrong. Not entirely though. Some arts (not Okinawan arts) don't use Bunkai the way Karate does, but it is very old. Some of those other arts, or the beginning forms that some arts use, were really just a formal list of moves for you to practice. But the advanced Kata all had Bunkai. Because the katas were teaching more then technique, they were teaching tactics (how you combine technique to succeed). It was also teaching strategy (broader view then tactic).

Kata is also for health, not just combat. I think this gets lost in conversation sometimes. Honestly, how much combat do we actually engage in? Personally, I do not go to places where fights are likely to, so why practice? For health obviously. Kata is many things, not just one.

Kata helps you to work a martial art and develop tower and balance in technique. You probably will not use a technique from your kata movement for movement in any fight, how ever, the power and balance that you get from practicing, the flexibility and endurance, the focus and concentration, the speed and muscle memory will benefit you in a free form fight. Kata can act as a blue print to break noses and grabs, regain balance and still deliver power. Not only that, if you are fortunate enough to

w/o bunkai and katas what would martial art's be? mma?

Kata was explained to me like this by my sensei, Kata is a story of a fight that happened just so, it's not the only way but it is how this fight took place. I'm not saying these are litiral fights but hopefuly i've made sense.

@tennochi28 you are not totally wrong but you are wrong bunkai did exsist before westerns even started karate, if you think about it, there are so many strange movements that aren't kihon that with out bunkai it would be like spirit fingers. Yes kata is not how you win a fight, kata will not prepare you for a fight, Funakoshi spelled that out, but the little bits of kata explain how each movement is used, and when done right the bunkai of a kata isn't jerky or weird but very clean.

@tennochi28 you a shotokan man by any chance?

@Legolasthefirst1 Yes, in the dojo while training. Nothing is easy in martial arts, and no stance is invincible. So you do have to work at it. But, yes, keeping yourself erect and maintaining proper posture alignment to your opponent gives you a strong edge. Lean back, you can be pushed. Lean forward you can be pulled. And in the speed of a fight with someone who knows what they're doing (esp. jiu jitsu), that little edge can be all a) they need to take you or b) you need to defend successfully
@tennochi28 Bunkai isnt a load of crap ,Kata is the condensing of technique to practice ...Bunkai is the deeper meaning of things..punching and blocks to a Noob like you they just look like slaps reverse punching and blocking to me and others we see kidney punching were you see low blocks we see grappling and joint locking were you see slaps and odd blocks that make no sense to you search Oyata seminars on youtube youll see some deeper meaning of Kata

In kumite you do not chamber at the hip. So this argument is moot. Chambering is for kata, as kata are simply forms, providing basic movements for specific types of confrontations. The bunkai for the kata of Isshin-ryu can, and usually are destructive techniques, even the blocks are strikes.
