Damn! Just when I think I'm out, they suck me back in. Gotta stop baiting the trolls... Nice try, but I'm not a fan of Ashida Kim. I simply find him amusing, like some other "Virtual Tough Guys" on this and other forums.
As for your comments which are directed at me personally, I find them all very cute, especially coming from a fan of "Grandmaster" Ashida Kim. Don't make the mistake, however, of assuming that I am another Internet joker or game-player. If you are ever in the SW USA, please let me know and I will get you an invitation to our dojo. Such a weekend will allow you to test my background and training here in the real world, and you can form your opinions afterward. Otherwise, have a nice life. :)
My apologies. In my reading and from what my instructors told me, and their instructors told them, it was only taught to certain families, passed on from generation to generation, and was by no means taught to all of the commoners of the islands, but rather a select few. Of course I wasn't there at the time, so I don't really know. By most accounts, however, it wasn't until folks like Funakoshi taught it at large that it became something all 'commoners" had access to.
Incorrect. Karate as it is known today originated in 17th century Okinawa as a means of unarmed combat for the public, whose weapons were confiscated by their Japanese overlords. Today's Okinawan styles can trace their lineage to this original style of karate. Nothing is watered down. Karate was never designed for the "elite", but for the commoner on the Ryukyu Islands. Why don't you put down your Playstation (or wherever you learned to play soldier) and pick up a book for a change?
You work with soldiers so I'm sure you know many can write encyclopedias about subjects they are passionate about. As for my training you may note it was to make a point, or in response to a personal comment I received. Back to the original topic: Classical karate is a viable method of combat. However it was for the elite and was never meant to be watered-down and taught to the public. Believe whatever you like. But this is the real world. If you want to know the truth, step-up and do it.
As a psychologist and practioner of Chibana-ha Shorin-ryu karate, I've worked professionally and personally with LEO's and former military guys. None of them talk as much as you do about their training or combat experience. Having read your posts on this and other videos, I've changed my opinion of you: I believe that you're nothing more than a wanna-be and a VTG. I don't believe that you've ever served in the miltary, jumped out of a plane or swam night-time combat missions in the ocean.
Oh I see! So when my Commanding Officer told me to jump out of a real plane with a real chute, I could have just pretended with my imagination and a plastic or wooden chute? And we didn't have to do all those hours and hours of live-fire training drills... we could have used paint-ball guns and learned just as well? And swimming in a nice clean, safe swimming pool would have prepared me for swimming in the ocean at night, and I didn't actually have to do it , to fully develop my skills?
I applaud your devotion to RBSD training, but accidents happen, even to the most gifted or well-trained martial artists. You don't need to train with live ammo or edged weapons to fully develop your skills or replicate dangerous situations. Just a matter of time before you or your students are seriously injured or killed. But please, go ahead and be "that guy". Prove once again to the rest of us why our human herd should be thinned through natural selection.
