@newjudoka With O soto gari, your only making contact with your hip and the back of their leg as you reap. A classic o soto gari Uke will be falling pretty much straight backwards.
With O soto guruma, your hips will be turned outwards (to the left if you're throwing right handed) so you can open your hips up to bring your leg up to attack your opponents hips instead of the leg.
I'd advise looking up O soto gari, O soto guruma again and also O soto otoshi.
