2006 WFD speed drumming champion Matt Smith sets unofficial 5 minute endurance record performing 5180 single strokes in 5 continuous minutes. During July 2007, Matt set the official 5 minute world endurance record at the WFD World Championships in Austin, Texas with 5132 single strokes. ON JUNE 26, 2008 MATT BROKE MIKE MANGINI'S TRADITIONAL GRIP WORLD RECORD, SCORING 1132 TO OFFICIALLY BE CLASSIFIED THAT GRIP'S WORLD'S FASTEST DRUMMER.

Note from Matt:
Although I accomplished the goal of 5 consecutive 1000+ runs, I did stumble for approximately one second at the 22 second mark. Therefore if you are judging this one on style points, guilty as charged.

  • @TBAG1000LTDedition just practice to a metronome man. increase metronome speed as it gets easier (always stay tension free and as clean as possible)

  • wow.. why not hold both sticks with that funky grip?

  • Crazy stick height for this speed! I think Matt is the only one out there that has gone beyond a minute with the hands, but I might be wrong. He definitely has the best hand endurance in the world!

  • Wow that is insane. Congrats on beating Mangini...not an easy task at all.

  • Fake?

  • You should check out Jojo Mayer's DVD, Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer. Its excellent. Good luck man, God bless.

  • Ok, thanks. I'll see what I can do.

  • playing fast is all about getting out of the way of the stick (or pedal) The more fluid your hand technique, and the more you can let your hands relax and let the stick go, the faster the strokes will pull off of the drumhead. It has nothing to do with strength. Something I've said many times before, and firmly believe... almost everyone already has enough strength and endurance in their forearms to have the worlds fastest hands. You just have to have clean technique, and let the stick work.

  • Yeah I know, I had these problems like a year ago. Now I always warm up for 10 minutes or so, and the problems are gone. Although you're kind of making me think twice. Maybe you're right.

But what about powerlifters for example? They have to lift extremely heavy weights in order to get strong. Isn't that kind of the same for drummers who want to able to play fast? Thanks for the help.

  • No man, you always have to relax! you can push the tempos, but still relax. The faster you go, the more relaxed you get, really. If you tense up, you wind up getting in the way of the sticks/pedals. Also, if you play tense, you wind up getting carpal tunnel and tendonitis, TRUST ME. I'm only 18 and I'm already have problems with my wrists and elbows from playing too tight. Always, always, always play loose!
