Metro is great, buy a all day pass for 3 pounds 20p; and you can go anywhere on the system all day, plus no parking and on the system the tram just takes you to each station with no stopping. Even with the Metrolink, green and no emission cars still are going have to be made. Petro cars are old technology, clean, new technology needs to replace them. Nearly no one will give up their cars.
Just expanded? Been 'expanding' for quite a while. The prissy assholes in the wealthy areas don't want the trains coming through as they're afraid they'll have to mix with them middle class folk. Like me. I would move closer to a train station if the costs of making the move were low enough to have an actual economic incentive over using the subsidized shitboxes known as cars. Gas would need to be over $4/gal for using mass transit to break even in my case. I'll get another bicycle before then.
Actually you have a light rail system in St. Louis which has just expanded. You've got more than a lot of cities so count your blessings. And if you want to use it, how about moving closer to a train station? Oh, that would be too much to ask, wouldn't it?

So funny. You should also take the metro in Norway. It is very short but great.
