@9P9T6 Well he killed himself in 1986 so... no.
I recommend you check out the film "The Red Elvis," you'd like it.

@Mrdie i had completely forgotten this video until your message resurfaced the memory of it. Bizarre on many levels. Somehow I imagine that Mr Read is still out there somewhere, making Soviet TV specials, riding a train in the middle of lonely Siberia, singing 60s civil rights era folk songs. The delusion of this figure, and the cynicism of his handlers are quite something

@9P9T6 Internally they obviously used him to placate youth who wanted to imitate the West ("Look! It's a guy who sings songs by famous Americans and can pass as a sex symbol! And he's a communist!"), but he was basically unknown outside of the Eastern Bloc.
I actually know a Uruguayan guy whose parents are Russians, and they remember him.

Just discovered this guy. I am sure this guy had enormous propaganda value for the Soviet and East German leadership. Thank goodness those days are over.

@CZArschloch That rains runs only at 20 kmh if tied to the locomotives the russians bought in the CSSR. If they run at all, I still remember the notorious TATRA tramways... around 4 kmh, you were faster by feet...
By the way, ever seen the latest czech battle tank??? it has 4 reverse and 1 forward gear (only to use if they have the germans behind... hahahahaha na sledanou you czech pig
Eigentlich wollte ich mich hier bei Straccio für das Video bedanken. Dean Reed höre ich immer wieder gern. Danke!
