I totally agree with your comment. WLS made a humongous killing on airing classic songs like "You," "Island Girl," "All By Myself," "Purple Dreams," "Swearin' To God," and "Fox On The Run." No more talk radio!!

@DrakeGrad - The worst part about losing AM music stations is that the FCC never mandated standards for broadcasting in stereo. I've heard AM Stereo music stations on my Sony SRF-A100 portable and Denon TU-680 NAB and the quality is close to FM and much better than the cheap AM sections manufacturers rip the public off with on their radios and receivers.
Voice-tracked automation has ruined a lot of careers. You won't see any "great voice tracking" awards.

Now this brings back some memories.WLS was the strongest AM signal we could pick up at night in South Arkansas during the late 1960s and early 70s. I did a lot of school homework listening the Kris Stevens. Eighty-nine. WLLLLLLLLLLS! Chi-ca-go!

Loved WLS growing up in Kankakee, IL from '69-'73. Larry Lujack was my favorite!

I used to listen in Louisiana I could pick them up after 6pm. It was so exciting for me being 3-7 years old listening to a radio station so far away. I thought that was the coolest thing. Better than any Satellite!!!!

@Airchecks The old car radio antennas were longer for AM also. Modern antennas are around 30' or so which is for FM. The antennas hidden in the windshield are lousy as well. The power company doesn't care about AM static since they don't listen to it. A transformer near my house is arching and making static that wipes out radio for nearly a mile. I can see the sparks at night. If this were knocking out FM, Cellphone or police/fire radio I can guarantee heads would roll untill it is fixed

In Rochester, NY, I used to get WLS, WCFL , CKLW and of course WKBW very clearly at night .and I used to listen to chicago and detroit all the time because I Loved that BIG city Sound as compared to our little 1000 watt rocker in Rochester: WBBF...the biggest thing BBF ever produced was NBC's late Jessica Savage and former Pittsburgh Pirate announcer Lanny Frattare. Now I live in ATLANTA GA and the BIG 89
comes in great at night

Listened to it in La Crosse WI back in the '70's. Part of the reason I wanted to live in Chicago when I grew up! And that happened!

@singlejeff69, i like that! you got guts! if i had to do a sells pitch, the only people i'd let in are price, jefferson pilot, chancelor, infinity, and others, not clear channel.
I used to crank John Landecker on WLS every night I could pick it up in Mississippi. These live DJs really put on a show. Its a shme no stations do this kind of radio anymore. Even WLS's mighty 50,000 watt signal is lost under a sea of electrical static and interference from stations out of the country.

@patrick9648 --Very true.....not to mention that the quality of most AM radios today is very poor...therefore, the ability to pick up stations without all the interference is nearly impossible. I remember the car radio in my dad's 1963 Ford Galaxy 500 was superb......so good that as a kid, I believed it could pick up transmissions from outer space!
