Since wasps have an open circulatory system and breathe through their abdomen, even the smallest bit of smoke will cause a wasp a great deal of trouble. If you smoke a wasp long enough (probably 30 sec) the wasp will generally die.
The nastier fuel you use to make the torch, the more effective the smoke will be at killing the wasp. In my experience, kerosene or diesel works best.

Perhaps it's a good thing your tree didn't set ablaze.
does fire and smoke provoke a panic response from bees instead of an aggressive response?

@TableSide88142Orchid
I'm pretty sure the fire provoked a "Hey, what happened to my wings!?!" response.

@emonidabestt
If Smokey the Bear got his nose stung by one of these needle-assed bastards, he'd be known as "Smokey the Forest Burner".

@Wolvyre
Dirty work? Wouldn't call it that. His job was actually the fun part. Plus, he was taller than me - I needed the extra reach.
