@undertake782 Those two people both willingly sign up to be in the cage to test their martial arts skills. To test their will to fight (which is the will to live). They (sometimes) beat the shit out of each other, because that's what might happen to you if you're in a fight. How can you train to defend yourself in a fight when you are NEVER confronted with the fruits of failure, or pressure test your skills?
Next thing you tell me, wrestling or boxing aren't martial arts.
-
@rincewin The whole idea is wrong if you take martial arts as a goal to beat the shit out of someone. What's a fight to you? MMA isn't real fighting. It's two people with gloves and shorts in a cage that are still limited to what they can do. In a real situation where someone is actually threatening your life, that's a fight. There's no pussy shit, it's going all out to defend yourself. Practicing all in itself is a good. Having it as a show where people want to see you bleed is not.
-
@rincewin Dude, you're putting two people in a cage, locking them up to beat the shit out of each other for money. Do you know anything about martial arts? Belts, etc do not end in black. They go into degrees. The martial arts journey never ends, you always practice every single day if you truly love it.
-
@undertake782 MMA is entirely a business plan where a belt factory traditional school isn't? Belt fees etc? Then why are you doing it 'right now'? MMA unlike most TMA is a journey that never ends with a black belt at the end.
There is a competition circuit for MMA because people like to test to see if it works. See how to perform under pressure and deal with that real pressure of : "oh shit, someone wants to smash my skull, and I have to defend myself now. Let's see if all my skills match up."
-
@undertake782 The true goal of martial arts is for defense/protection from what exactly? Teddybears? No, from a fight. So, how do you train that as realistic as possible? By fighting. You want to win the fight to defend yourself/loved ones right? not look the prettiest.
Why should they teach/aim to teach you to do anything else but win that fight?
-
@rincewin I'm doing MMA training right now but the thing is, you don't understand that MMA entirely is just a giant business plan. A true martial artist is someone who doesn't use their skills until it is the right time. A true martial artists doesn't use his skills with any attention to harm but to defend. MMA in itself isn't a martial arts, it's a giant competition where everyone likes to see people get smashed.
-
@rincewin You don't understand, I don't mean MMA having every single martial arts means it's a bloodsport. The way it is taught and administered aims to fight and to win rather than the true goal of martial arts which is for defense to protect yourself and loved ones.
-
@PICLex Also, if someone comes at you from a TMA, they aint gonna like being punched in the face, or kicked in the leg, or being taken down*. TMA is a sport first and foremost, youjust don't get to learn real fighting from a fat white guy pretending to be a korean/japanese cultural instructor.
-
@undertake782 ?? So because 'mma is a bunch of martial arts mixed together it is a bloodsport, does that mean its component martial arts are also bloodsports?
What is wrong with a 'bloodsport'? We all have blood, sometimes a little comes out. kids fight. Sometimes people need to let out aggression; what better way than have to consenting adults agree to vent their frustration on each other, to a point they both agree to, and then be completely cool with it. Sounds fucking terrible, doesn't it?
@KungFuKid1015
Why don't you guys learn the forms? They're great for conditioning the mind and body and internalizing the movements of the techniques. Plus you can teach the forms with applications to help the students remember them. All in all, it's a very efficient way to preserve the tradition for future generations.

I like the technique @ 26-28 secs! How you use a block in a cat stance into a double tiger claw strike in a bow. Very useful, I use that technique in my own curriculum!
