Zia declared Independence, not Bangabandhu said Kader Siddiqui

It was the then army Major Ziaur Rahman who had declared the independence of Bangladesh said Kader Siddique a highly decorated freedom fighter, has said on Friday 18 March 2011. He was talking at a seminar titled 'Forty Years of Freedom: Trial of War Criminals and Criminals against Humanity' at the community hall of Dhaka Reporters Unity.

Admitting Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the leader of the freedom struggle, Siddique told the guests that it is not right that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence. It was Ziaur Rahman who declared it and helped the people beef up spirit to engage in the struggle for freedom.

Being a vocal advocate of the war crimes trial for 1971, Siddique came critical about the government efforts since its beginning. He said in Friday's seminar that the present government is serious in the war crimes trial by no means. Criticizing the exclusively formed tribunal to try the war criminals, he said that it does not go by the international standard in any ways.
