In turn-of-the-century Sweden, cancer-stricken, dying Agnes is visited in her isolated rural mansion by her sisters Karin and Maria. As Agnes' condition deteriorates and pain management becomes increasingly more difficult, fear and revulsion grip the sisters, who seem incapable of empathy, and Agnes' only comfort and solace comes from her maid Anna. As the end draws closer, long repressed feelings of grudging resentment and mistrust cause jealousy, selfishness, and bitterness between the siblings to surface.

  • Forget The Third Man or 400 Blows or any other movie; this is probably the greatest ending to a movie I've ever seen.

  • This is one of the most stunning artistic expressions of the twentieth century.

    Period.

  • Good God! That was awesome

I was breathing with them all the time!

The act of Agnes was the best.

  • How can a man who devotes his life to making this kind of movies, also devote the same life to making 9 children ?

  • I first saw this film when I was in my late teens. I remember thinking it was simply beautiful to look at, like masterful paintings strung together frame to frame. I knew so little then. As I have gotten older, and some 35 years have gone by in what seems a few summers....I now see so much more in the film than I could have imagined in my youth. A difficult film, a beautiful film, a film that should be seen by all humans at least once...

  • Tack så mycket!

  • Oh so beautiful...I once owned the DVD, but the scene with the broken glass and the blood turned my stomach so much that I couldn't bring myself to watch the rest of it. I gave the DVD away. After all these years, I finally watched it in its entirety... I'm getting the DVD again.

  • If I was Anna I would of killed them all while they slept.

  • This was to much for me. I liked it a lot, but my own emotional problems are brought to light and it's too painfull to deal with them. Great film!

  • Thank you, NewMoonFox, for all this food for thought.
