19 - Shirk - It's definition and dangers - Fundamentals of Faith - Yasir Qadhi

In this of Fundamentals of Faith, Shaikh Abu Ammar Yassir Qadhi talks about the exact opposite of Tawheed which is Shirk. A must see lecture for all.

We Read in the Qur'an:

"And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass over while they, therefrom, are turning away.

And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him.

Then do they feel secure that there will not come to them an overwhelming [aspect] of the punishment of Allah or that the Hour will not come upon them suddenly while they do not perceive?

Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."

And We sent not before you [as messengers] except men to whom We revealed from among the people of cities. So have they not traveled through the earth and observed how was the end of those before them? And the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah; then will you not reason?

[They continued] until, when the messengers despaired and were certain that they had been denied, there came to them Our victory, and whoever We willed was saved. And Our punishment cannot be repelled from the people who are criminals.

There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."

This programme talks about Tawheed, the unshakeable belief in one God, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. Islam is based on the belief of the one true God. All Prophets, Peace be upon them all, were sent with the Message of the Oneness of Allah Azza Wa Jall.
"...Knowledge is the discerning proof of what is right and what is wrong, and it is the positive force that will help you surmount the trials of comfort, as well as those of hardships. Knowledge is your most powerful sword against your enemy, and finally, it is your most dignifying raiment in the company of your close companions."

Before a student of knowledge masters the complexities of Arabic grammar, the intricacies of fiqh, or the details of hadeeth criticism, he or she must have firm knowledge and belief in the fundamentals of our deen. Our 'aqeedah is the pillar by which our deen stands firm, the fertile land from which all of our actions blossom, and it is the foundation from which all other Islamic sciences grow.

'Aqeedah is linguistically derived from the term 'aqadah' - a verb which means "to hold fast to" or "to establish". According to our scholars, 'aqeedah is the firm creed and beliefs that one's heart is fixed upon without any wavering or doubt. Are we certain about these beliefs to which our hearts should be tied? How well do we know the fundamental tenets of Islam, relating to our eman in Allah (swt), in the prophets, the books, the angels, the Last day and Qadr [fate]?

Imam Abu Haneefah, rahimahullah, called his work on 'aqeedah "al-Fiqh al-Akbar" (The Greater Understanding), while he referred to shari'ah as simply, "the understanding of science". This series of lectures is an opportunity to grasp this 'greater understanding', to grant us deeper awareness and knowledge about the crucial beliefs that form the skeleton of Islam, and to tie our hearts to these truths.

Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences. Thereafter, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah.

His published works include Riya'a: The Hidden Shirk, Du'aa: The Weapon of the Believer, and An Introduction to the Sciences of the Qur'an.

Yasir Qadhi is currently pursuing his doctorate, in Religious Studies, at Yale University in New Haven, CT.

@Synergistik If I had to give an advice to Brother Yasir, I would advise him to go straight to the point in his lectures else the information gets 'diluted'. Use less words and our Prophet SAW used to speak with only a few words but they had so much weight. Anyway Br. Yassir is doing a good job.

His definition of shirk is not very clear. What does he mean by ‘give the rights?’ For example, if I give Zakaat to an official collector, then it is Allah’s right that this money is given to the poor. So if the collector takes the money for himself (and he is rich), has he committed shirk according to Yasir? It is a strange definition.

darood o salaam is a part of a muslims life which cannot be detached from a muslim.

in every day namaz also in TASHAHUD(athayyat) we read : wassalamu alaika ayyuhannabi wa rahmatullahi wa barkatahu(in english-Peace and the mercy and blessings of Allaah be upon you O Prophet/ ya nabi salaam in urdu).

@khalifahklothing salaam is it shirk to send salaams upon the Holy Prophet alayhi salaam by saying "asalaatu asalaam alyka Ya RasoolAllah?"

My understanding is that Angels convey the salaam on our behalf.
