Ancient Olympia, Greece - O Superman

"Ancient Olympia - O Superman" is both a record and tribute. A record of my visit to Olympia in part, the journey and what motivated me to visit. More importantly, it is a tribute to the complex ideals of Ancient Olympia, its physical, spiritual, religious and aesthetic aspirations.

It is a journey which dates back to ancient times, traveled time and time again by foot, wheel or hoof by those who believed in an ideal. In this case it is by wheel, 3 of them, but under human power, not "petro-chemical".

The music is Laurie Anderson's O' Superman (1982) remixed and then edited to help highlight those lyrics which assisted in the idea of a journey in pursuit of an ideal and a message still relevant to modern man. The lyrics "Oh Mum and Dad" can just as easily be heard as "Oh Modern Man", which is more in keeping with the underlying idea of the clip - the idea that classical ideals still have a pertinent message to give us, are capable of providing inspiration in what all too often seems a materialistic "petro-chemical" dominated modern world.

I was glad to have made the journey to Ancient Olympia with my own exertions, with only the assistance of the technology of a bicycle. I arrived exhausted, in the late of night, and felt I had accomplished something, run my own race in the journey to Olympia. I had arrived at what was the most, if not the, sacred place in the ancient Greek world. Now in ruins, what it represented remains undiminished as long as that spirit stirs and enlivens us.

The art works salvaged and on display at Olympia inform us that to the Greeks man has several aspects ranging from the physical to the spiritual, all of which are connected. Man's mere form being a reflection of his more divine nature, and in itself, in its natural naked form, worthy of adulation and a source of inspiration in what it reflects.

Riding in cities such as Thessalonki was challenging. Sharing lanes with buses felt like an episode of Walking With Dinosaurs. Otherwise it was open road and there was rarely a problem.

I was pulled over by the police a couple of times concerned for my safety. Another time they gave me an escort across the Rio Antirio bridge.

The strangeness of the vehicle combined with a highly visible flag meant I was given ample attention.

This was pretty brilliant. I disagreed with how most of the remixes were made but you did an exelent job. Not how i would have dont it, but thats what makes it unique

They did everything nude at the Ancient Olympics. I was tempted to run the 200 metres naked at the end but reasoned the authenticity might not sit well with a youtube video.
