Welsh singer songwriter Martyn Joseph's ballad of the tale of Richard Lewis (Dic Penderyn) and the Merthyr Rising of 1831.

The Merthyr riots, in the the town of Merthyr Tydfil on the Welsh Valleys, were largely caused by the greed of iron works owners of the time.

Conditions, wage reductions and the creation of 'truck shops'... whereby specially minted coins were paid over to be spent only at stores owned by the iron masters where goods were overpriced; were all key factors in the protests.

As the rebellion gained pace, the military were called. It was here that a soldier was stabbed. Dic Penderyn was falsely accused and executed in St Marys Street, Cardiff, much as an example to the rioters.

  • It would be great if you upload some of your recordings as mp3 files on rapidshare. This one for example is like I said in my last comment sounds very great in this version, or I'm Counting On You, which you covered very good (and I think Chris de Burgh Songs are difficult to sing). Another good one is All in the Past. Maybe a cover of Lonely Sky (Chris de Burgh) would be another great one too.

  • Really appreciate your thoughts I'll look inti the MP3 thing. Thanks

  • Love your stuff..ever think of cover Chris Deburgh songs? Your voice is similar to his.

Let me know if you do.

  • Thanks very much.....yeh certainly like early Chris de Burgh....Crusader, Spanish Train.... etc will have to give them a try thanks for the tip. Robin

  • Heard this on 'Celtic Heartbeat' on BBC Radio Wales sung by Martyn Joseph on Saturday evening (8/11/08) Immediately thought of your version.

  • Thanks alot Glenn....Martyn Joseph does some great stuff check him out on Piper Records or I'll send you a couple of Cds I've got.

    Robin
