At the time he was age 7. This was only his third time riding on ice. However, he was an "experienced" motorcycle racer. He had two seasons of experience racing in Hare Scrambles, which are races on narrow forest trails.

Before this video was shot Gavin had only rode his 65SX two other times on the ice. He slowly rode in small circles, not trusting that the tires would actually stick. The video shows his third time on the ice. This was the first time he tried riding fast on ice. Thus he was not an experienced ice racer, just a beginner. One rider visible in the background on an older bike was wearing the MN State Champion, Super Senior Flat Track Jacket. He was running the same speed as Gavin.
