Horatio Hornblower: The Fire Ships (Pt. 3)

In the dark days of the Napoleonic War, Horatio Hornblower and the crew of the Indefatigable are put on half rations. But Hornblower is distracted from his hunger by the prospect of a commission, for Captain Pellew has nominated the young sailor for the lieutenants exams.

The Indefatigable soon sails to the African Coast to buy provisions. While ashore, Hornblower and his men are exposed to the Black Plague. Hornblower proposes that they serve their three-week quarantine by sailing another ship back to Gibraltar to rendezvous with the fleet. The mission proves that the real test of a sailors worth comes at sea, not in the examination hall.

That... was... weird! LOL! I had this on HQ and full screen, and at the end of the part i pressed Esc on my keyboard, and The video screen was borded with YELLOW! LOL! Weird eh?

That's called scurvy . Later fresh fruit , mostly limes ( hence " Limeys " ) and bottled fruit juice combated this condition.

Thanks Bramblefox for these beautiful, addicting episodes! You've put in so much work, it's just wonderful. Guy movies are mostly WWII & such so I don't watch them much, but this - this I just love them all.... even though there's been no pretty gal in sight for past 2 series (& you're telling me the one on the horizon will be urgh oh no! plain), their uniforms are so wowly awesome! Do any of you get why the men are giving bits of their dinner to someone else? They are starving if I get it right. Without Finch there wouldn't have been an Horatio. A very decent man who respected a young officer./ I appreciate that these officers tried to teach H honor. He remembers everything and I can see that he puts it into practice ever after. You know they didn't have to help at all. Horatio became a man because of Finch. A lowly seaman who made an Admiral. High honors Finch! Hip.

@jager18903 Well put. The reason his teeth were falling out is because he was starving and his body stripped the calcium from his teeth for the minerals/vitamins it needed to keep alive. If I understand it correctly, the body literally starts eating itself. Some starving people will have distended bellies because the stomach's lining is also consumed. Liquids aren't contained and gases form, extending the belly. Very sad to see. A healthy diet is that important. Cigerettes also strip calcium.

Hey there. This my favorite Hornblower episode before Gregory Peck plays the role. Thanks for uploading these. Just one question though, are you aware that when Mr. Clevland is told a second time to spread the word of the supply ship, that the movie skips quite a few scenes before it resumes whith the entrance of the fire ship?
