0.3% of the population, own 37 million acres, two thirds of Britain. They pay no land tax. Instead every government gives them £2.3 billion a year and the EU gives them a further £2 billion. Each family gets £26,875.
By contrast, 57.5 million of us pay £10 billion a year in council tax, a land tax, £600 per household. We live in 24 million homes on about four million acres. 65% of homes are privately owned, so 16 million of us own just 2.8 million acres, an average 0.18 acres each.

Brilliant and illuminating. All of this work by Curtis for the BBC needs to be shown to Americans, who still don't know what is going on. The Circus Maximus of U.S. politics will never be able to deal with any of what has been destroyed in the last 60 years. See the later Charlie Rose interview with Goldsmith and hear him warn what is coming. What he participated HUGELY in doing. Creepy does not ever begin to express the chilling nature of what has and is happening.

Adam Curtis is an absolute master of tone, the opening montage is so foreboding and the initial segment about Goldsmith's libel action is wonderfully eerie. A king among men.
One of the best documentaries ever and episode 3 is my favourite! What the episode showed me was how during the 70s the market (and money, its only currency) won over social order. When money is the only currency, corruption is inevitable.
And amazing to think that there might be an alternative to money driven decisions.
