  • Why did I go out?

It was a joint pursuit race between two sailing clubs on my lake. The weather was supposed to improve not worsen. They called the race as I got to the start area but my marina was then an hour to windward. For safety's sake I dropped my main and powered back. I still had a 5 degree heal under bare poles.

  • Then again, my experience is all freshwater sailing and my boat is a cat rigged Freedom21 with a staysail for winds under 10 knots. My boat is designed to sail under reefed main only in strong winds.

I have been caught out solo by unexpectedly worsening weather (20-25 mph winds freshened to 40 in less than an hour). Even a double reefed main in those winds becomes a white nuckle ride in those circumstances.

  • I have to disagree about the dinghy. It is inflated and ready to go incase of an emergency. Further more, its tow lines are rigged to prevent fowling the rudder and also provide even drag astern rather than on either quarter.

Sails: It looks like at least one reef has been tucked in. If they don't have a storm jib, anything larger would probably overpower them. IMHO

  • I mean that on should go saling in force 7 with a dinghy behind. It is slowing the boat and hampers any emergency manoeuvres should ther be one ( man overboard for example ). Same applies for sailing with no jib. Reef that main and balance the boat.

  • Define terrible. Do you mean hard going or are you being critical of their seamanship?

If you mean the former then I agree. If the later, neither you nor I were there. From what I see in the vid, they would have been over powered with a jib and were probably better off without one.

  • you don't know where is solent you are not a real sailor...

  • Force 7 with the dinghy trailing behind!!! and no jib!!! What a terrible piece of sailing that is.

  • nic but wut or wers solent?
