Canadian Forces CF-18 Hornet
INFO: For 100 years, Canada's sons and daughters have soared through the world's open skies, carried in the cockpits and the cabins of powered aircraft that are as varied as they are numerous. In just one century, through war and peace, Canada has seen aviation evolve from the fragile frame of the Silver Dart to the supersonic speed of the CF-18 Hornet.
Perhaps more than anything else in the 20th Century, powered flight captures the essence of mankind's creative drive and innovative spirit. And here in Canada, nothing reflects that spirit more than the Century Hornet.

The Jet
On February 12, 4 Wing Cold Lake rolled out a unique tribute to the centennial of powered flight in Canada. Dubbed the Century Hornet, and featuring a "once in a century" paint design, the CF-18 national demonstration jet will be dazzling audiences across North America during the 2009 air show season.

The Design
The paint scheme was designed to commemorate the Canadian Centennial of Flight. It incorporates classic Canadian Air Force motifs such as the lightning bolt on the fuselage and full-colour roundels. The centennial logo, designed by Dave O'Malley of Ottawa, is featured on both tails in full colour and faded blues. ...

Unlike most years where only the tail of the jet is painted, the 2009 demo jet features a full-body paint scheme. This work of art was applied at 1 Air Maintenance Squadron by Crew Chief, Master Corporal Shawn Perry, and his team of air component and structure technicians. Serving as both designer and paint team member, Jim Belliveau participated in a 13-day whirlwind paint booth session to bring his thirty-first paint scheme to completion.

As the Canadian Air Force's frontline multi-role fighter, the CF-18 is used for air defence, air superiority, tactical support, training, aerobatic demonstration and aerospace testing and evaluation.

Canada's tactical fighter squadrons have served around the world, and under Canada's NORAD partnership with the United States, protect the skies of North America 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year.

  • Keep up the great work! Awesome photography. Thank you.

  • beyond awesome! the sound of that thing is eerie, makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up

  • Wow... I still remember '09, 100 years of Canadian powered aviation... for three days, the weather was nice. this year, '11 is soo cold and cloudy. but thankfully no rain and the show went on!

  • Fantastic video, absolutely amazing coverage

  • @Jacseg23 I forgot to say Military aircraft coordinator for Montréal airshow on last comment in 1991 St-Hubert airshow in Montréal. You have to understand that Thunderbirds and Blue Angels have routines that they practice day in day out. They have a low show in case of minimum clouds and the have a high show and when they come to Canada are minimum AGL ( above ground level) is not the same as USA and sometime some of the teams don't always respect our minimums.

  • slowest speed is about 120 mph (indicated speed; Section High Alpha). We don't abide by FAA regulation in Canadian airshows. We abide by DOT ( Department of transport) and ICAS ( International Council of Airshows) rules. We have publish minimum AGL's which unfortunately is not always followed by American Teams especially the Blue Angels. I was aircraft for Montreal for Montréal Airshow way back then, we had some very serious discussions after first show. They did it again second show.

  • One of the greatest videos of the CF 18 I've ever seen! The sounds are amazing!!!! This gets me pumped up!!!!!! Short, sweet, and kick-ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @bleedadream777 yea I figured :P I was going to say that if they abide by FAA during airshows, they would sure be boring :P

  • @eclipse245 lol high alpha pass is almost up there ya man the minimum they fly is like 300-400 knots then there high speed pass 700
