Amid increased tension between Israel and Syria, the government in Damascus has decided to build homes in the Golan Heights.

But as Al Jazeera's Rula Amin reports, local residents are preparing for both war and peace.

Your view is narrow and distorted. While Israel fights to protect its people, the Palestinians and other Arabs use their own people as human shields. Israel doesn't violate UN and international law but only appears to when people deny that they are acting in defense. In 1967 Israel started the war. I'd agree its victory in 1967 was one of the most spectacular, well-planned and well-executied wars (from a military stand-point). But it hasn't been "little ole Israel" for a while. The US has provided it with military technology, munitions and armaments, as well as financial aid to Israel for a LONG time. Isreal is not alone.

Golan heights is a beautiful Israeli territory, thats been part of Israel for almost 45 years now. Israel celebrates now 30 years for the annexation of the Golan!

There is a consensus in Israel among vast majority of Israelis (left to right) who all agree that the Golan is extremely significant in all aspects: tourism, water, wineries, agriculture, production, security- and will stay part of Israel also in peace times. It was part of Syria for only 20 years, and taken b-c of their agression.

@mavsguy842 Syria, Egypt and Jordan were also not alone (big old USSR on their side). This war generally was american influence VS soviet influence in the middle east region. All wars are ugly and sadly most countries are just puppets of some stronger but not that visible forces behind it.

The Chances that Israel will EVER give this precious land to Syria in the future, are similar to the chances that the USA will ever give California to Mexico....

I believe its a good lesson: Agressive, totalitarian radical countries that open war against innocent democracies, should not whine and be surprised when they lose territories, and when these territories are not given back. The Golan hights is part of Israel for almost 44 now, and I don't expect it to change in the next 50 years.
