The black and white markings are their "breeding plumage". In the spring, the birds will molt, and change their markings from the drab winter plumage, to the distinctive summer color. While the loons are in molt, they cannot fly at all, but once the molt is complete, they may return to inland, still waters, where they may build nests and breed.
