Spotted a common loon in Boothbay, then saw it swim up to another one that was initially out of view.

  • hmm... good to know...

  • The black and white markings are their "breeding plumage". In the spring, the birds will molt, and change their markings from the drab winter plumage, to the distinctive summer color. While the loons are in molt, they cannot fly at all, but once the molt is complete, they may return to inland, still waters, where they may build nests and breed.

  • I really don't think that is a common loon... where are the black and white markings?
