I love how they continued the story of "Thirdspace" with this one and didn't completely ignore the idea of a thirdspace that was faster.. Well they kinda did, and went to Quantum Space.. but can't really blame them after what happened last time they entered Thirdspace :P

the vorlons were secretive - they could've used Quantum Drives which were not mentioned in the series simply because Vorlons, like Minbari, "don't exactly tell you everything."

the vorlons wanted order, more precisely, their order, to control the direction of the younger races, and a big part of that was manipulating how they thought and how they developed tech.

many fan-fictions i read went as far as to have the vorlons sabotage development of tech they considered the younger races 'not ready for'.
