The Couch Enforcer

One week ago, someone claiming to be from CITY OF KEENE "Code Enforcement" threatened me over a couch in my tenants' yard. They use the couch for birdwatching and it has been there for longer than I can remember. Now the Blue Light Gang has a problem with it? Whose property is this, anyway?

Today, 08/26/08 he returned and I had my camera ready.

Ok, let me get this straight. You can have a chair in your yard or a swing on your lawn, but you cant have a couch outside of your home because it looks just a little different than a swing? In a democracy, consent of the governed means the majority, not the lone individual disregarding others. If the majority in that town believes their community should be free of trash and junk such as your couch (with a law to that effect), remove the couch. Otherwise, you're foolishly at odds with that majority and will lose in the end.

John Locke, a British philosopher in the Enlightenment, laid this all out. He came up with the idea that governments exist for the benefit of the governed. Man is born free but voluntarily gives up some of his freedom to establish government for the purpose of social order. Government derives its true powers from the consent of the governed. When a government no longer suits their needs, the people have both the right and the duty to make changes, or even to abolish a government altogether.

@OneVoiceMore That's fine, you can call them privileges. Also, if you hate America, the only choices you have are leaving or voting to change it. The American government doesn't have to be bent over backwards for us, it could be just like North Korea, China, Mexico, or any other country, but it isn't. It isn't meant to bend toward the individual. We're lucky to only have to pay FAIR taxes. As for hand picking candidates, I know I don't want our citizens picking. Have you seen NASCAR?

@OneVoiceMore Residing in a city isn't explicit consent, but being a citizen is. Taxes and abiding by the law are the prices we pay for living in any country. Your rights aren't being violated, what you THINK are your rights might be being violated, but it's not your right to avoid taxes of the country you live in. You don't vote, but if you did maybe you could have voted those taxes, and then you would have something to complain about, but you didn't even try to get things your way.
