Water circulates via thermsiphon. It works very well, even though I only have a small distance between hot (top) pipe and cold (bottom) pipe. Water level must be above the HW return to tub. One thing I would modify is the angle of the CW into the fire should be slightly up. The HW return is also angled up. Reason being when I empty the tub, a small amount of water sits inside the tube and does not fully drain out. Takes about an hour to heat up.

I tried to build this same thing, when I tried to bend the copper pipe it would flatten and or break in half. Please let me know how you did it and what kind of copper pipe did you use. I dont remember what I tried it was a 10' chunk from the hardware store. Please Help!!!

Dear curlyh53, I bought the pipe already coiled flat from the hardware shop, I just spread it out a bit and then bent the two ends outward to fit through the washing machine drum. That was mildly hard to do. The pipe is 3/4". The length was about the same as you have.

They make this spring-looking thingy-ma-gadget for bending pipe like this. It puts even pressure all the way around as you bend so it doesn't fold up on you and crease.... Make sure you ask for the spring-looking thingy-ma-gadget at the plumbing supply store.... :-D no, just ask for a pipe bending spring.

@curlyh53 Bending copper tubing by hand is real pain, but if you have something to bend it AROUND, it works quite well. For something this size, probably something like a five gallon bucket would probably be about the right size, but use whatever you can get your hands on that would be small enough to fit in your fire box but big enough to build a fire in. In the case of the bucket, clamp the short end of the tub at the mouth of the bucket and form it around it. Should keep it from kinking.

@crackerfat1 if you fill the pipe with really well ground salt or sang then it doesn't buckle
