Since I couldn't find any real Avernum gameplay videos on YouTube, I decided to add one myself, even though I'm not very familiar with the series nor own full versions of any of Jeff Vogel's games (yet). This is just a short Avernum 5 video of me creating a party and running around in the first dungeon picking up loot and killing zombies. One of these days, I'm going to buy a couple of games from Spiderweb Software (I was thinking Geneforge 4, Avernum 5 and Nethergate) and start playing them seriously, but for now, this is all I have to offer. For more info, check the links below.

A fairly in-depth review of Avernum 5 from RPGWatch:

An amusing article on why Mr Vogel apparently hates fantasy RPGs:

Another funny and brutally honest article by Vogel on why creating innovative games is a really bad idea:

  • @Demiath I have Nethergate, and the game is amazing. Geneforge is weird for me because I like the first one the best. As for Avernum, I am not sure. I relly think that someone should put something up on Youtube about these games because they are so underrated.

  • @fordrake Nethergate sounds cool; that and Avernum 3 are on my To Buy list when it comes to the Spiderweb games. As for YouTube videos of Avernum, there are at least a few gameplay videos each of Avernum 4-6 in particular. I've personally uploaded the first few videos of their new game Avadon, as well.

  • I played Exile III, and I must say, it was incredible. People can bitch about the graphics or game play, but the fact is it's clever and well writen. You're not just playing or blowing stuff up or killing things. There are INTERESTING characters and towns and plots.

Erika Redmark was enchanting. The Vahnatai are interesting. The final fight was epic. The Anama are a hilarious parody of Christians. The drug trafficking, the town you wake up and find undead in, and so much more.

  • Anyone who loves RPG's(especially old school ones) and can stand some pretty bad graphics will LOVE this game!I recommend you try other games from spiderweb software.I have them all registered. And I mean ALL.

  • does anybody know where I get download a geneforge 3&4 trainer? I've google searched all I can and can't find an active link to them.

  • i like geneforge better but i still like this for its RPG-ness :3

  • lol, most of the stuff in the game is taken from their Geneforge game, and a little from Exile.

  • Im playing the demo now and you are right! Gameplay is spot on,, and the AI plays well. I would love to see that game get a facelift and get better graphics. it doesnt need to be high end, Eschalon Book graphics would be perfect and not that difficult to implement I would think... I'm still searching though... thanks for the heads up

  • Trust me; If you don't bother playing Knights of the Chalice because the graphics are a bit low-res you're missing out on the greatest old school RPG experience since Temple of Elemental Evil. At the very least give it 5-10 hours if you haven't already. Graphics are one of those things you can get used to, and when the gameplay is this good (much better than both Avernum, Age of Decadence and Eschalon in my opinion) I'd hate to see you miss out on such a great hardcore D&D-based experience...

  • I almost forgot to mention this; Age of Decadence is looking to be a sharp game - but thats only single player character as well...

  • i checked it out and its ok i guess, just a little weak in the graphics... Again, Id like toi see a cross between Avernum and the Eschelon Book series. I would ove to play a real D&D game. The Temple of Elewmental Evil is a great example and its one of my favorite games.

  • Have you played Knights of the Chalice? Don't know if you've seen my KOTC videos but that's pretty much the kind of game you're describing here...
