I Will Run and Hide Until Memories Fade Away

Background Story:
Merry has always been best friends with Violet. When Merry developed a liking to the shieldmaiden Eowyn, Violet was disappointed, but still supported Merry. Merry, who always supported war, was promoted to Esquire of Rohan by Eowyn. Eowyn promised Merry that he would go off to war with her one day. They vowed to keep it a secret because Violet did not support the war at all.

Story:
When the day came for Merry to be called to duty, he remembered what Eowyn said to him that night 4 months ago. Violet askes, "Are you ok?" when Merry's eyes tear up. He embraces her and holds her in his arms because he knows she can't stop him from leaving.

Merry tells her that she has to get out of Rohan because the enemy will attack Rohon in two days. Violet, realizing Merry lied to her about joining the army, says, "No, this is our home now!" Merry gets angry and says, "Don't you understand-" "Go," interupts Violet. Merry continues, saying, "I want to fight!" Violet screams,"Go!" As Merry stares at her in shock, Eowyn grabs Merry and they ride off to war.

As the days go by, Merry can't stop thinking about his best friend and cannot sleep very well. Eowyn, seeing his attachment to Violet even though he left her, asks, " Where is she? The woman who gave you that jewel?" Merry hides his necklass Violet gave him and storms away. He frustrated that he did not know Violet has loved him for all this time. He is afraid that he had fell in love with the wrong woman, Eowyn, instead of the one whom he was ment for, Violet.

As Merry fights in batte, memories of Violet flash through his mind. He sees Eowyn in trouble and comes to her rescue, but wounds himself. Eowyn, injured herself, crawls over to her dying companion. He strokes her cheek and says, "Violet..." Eowyn frowns. Merry dies in her arms wishing that he was with Violet once more and knowing that she was right all along....

"I think...we made a mistake leaving the Shire...."
