This is a video supplement for the webcomic Surviving the World (http://survivingtheworld.net) Lesson #1151 - Chemical Engineering (http://survivingtheworld.net/Lesson1151.html).

For a clearer image of a water droplet on the teflon surface, both before and after treatment, you can see them here: http://twitpic.com/2pcdot The paper on this method by Nilsson, Daniello and Rothstein (from UMass, not MIT as stated in the video) can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/pFFBWO

For a clearer image of the water droplet on the modified glass wafer, you can see a series of photos taken as the droplet evaporates off the surface here: http://twitpic.com/5mj3da The paper on this work by Gao and McCarthy (also from UMass) can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/pHCdtq

Any further questions/complaints can be directed to Dante Shepherd via email. Thanks for watching/learning.

  • I have learned so much! I am in AP Bio and freaked out at the mention of hydrophobia. Would dyed water have made a difference in appearance or the ability to slide?

  • @DoctorsGreenMaggot Yes, probably. It depends on whether or not the dye would interact with the surface or induce greater adhering at the surface. Certainly for chemical modified surfaces this would be a bigger concern. For purely physical modifications, like the Teflon, the dye might be less of an issue - but it would probably change the water's properties enough (like surface tension) that the air gaps in the micron-scale roughness would be filled in.

  • YOU HAVE A VOICE?!!! (I actually was under the impression that you were mute and used ASL for your means of communication based off of your gestures)

  • Now I can't stop reading his webcomic in his voice...

  • "screw you... thanks for watching."

    ohgosh... i love this(:

  • Oh wait holy crap I remember this from Stumbleupon! You clever dog, you! The superhydrophobic spray is supposed to be available commercially in 2012.

  • born in 90's, i have rolling labyrinth

  • He's a fucking doctor.

  • can water be hydrophobic?

  • Gotta love that goatee <3

  • chemical or biomechanical engineering.... hmm... chemical engineering may lead to increased funny bone mass. That or they've created a concoction that will do that, the fiends! They're holding out on us!

  • I honestly thought you were a professor...
