A drug-eluting stent (DES) has been shown to be absorbed entirely after implantation into patients' blood vessels for the first time.

Abbott's bioabsorbable DES technology has been backed by further results of the ABSORB clinical trial, which reported on the first 30 patients two years after the stent was implanted. The study's investigators presented imaging data at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2008 meeting, held in Washington, DC, last week, showing that the device disappeared completely.
