Welcome to the first installment of CHOWs new video series, Cooking with Grandma, a nostalgic trip down memory lane that records a special family recipe. Here, Alvina Mangrai shows her granddaughter Alyssa how to make her prawn curry and coconut rice. Thanks to Pat Tanumihardja, whose blog, The Asian Grandmothers Cookbook, helped us find Alvina and Alyssa!

  • Sad, Most burmese assimilate into american culture too much. They totally lose their language abilties and fail to pass down to their next generation.

  • This series is awesome who better to learn from than our elders. I would like to see one video on traditional Native American foods we have wonderful culinary traditions as well. But I do adore cooking Asian foods.

  • Alvina reminds me of my memere. She wasn't at all of asian descent, but she had the same style. Thanks for sharing!

  • im burmese and i think you should talk in burmese

  • i hit that not the old lady the young one

  • I loved your grandma!!!! She is so nice!!! And I'm sure the food must taste like King's food! I will try it! Thumbs up!

  • I miss my grandma. She was the best cook, and I used to watch mine all the time. Replicating their recipes on the spot can be a challenge in itself. Your grandma seems like a sweet old lady:) and the food looks delicious.

  • ;) WoW.. your grandma can cook well....

  • @whitetornadodk Because all grandpa does is chew tobacco and swear at people ;)
