The first movement of Ysaye's second violin sonata played on mandolin by Alon Sariel.

Born in Israel (1986), Sariel is a graduate of the Beer Sheva Conservatory and the Jerusalem Academy of Music where he have studied mandolin, lute and orchestral conducting while serving in the IDF under the title of an "extraordinary musician" given to him by the Israeli education ministry,

Among the several top prizes he earned in Israel and abroad are the Aviv Competition Meira Gera Audience Prize (Tel Aviv 09), The International Mandolin Award (Greece 07), The Jerusalem Academy Competition for String Instruments (06), the Jerusalem Academy Chamber Music Competition (07) and the Jerusalem Academy Conductors Competition (09), The Raffaele Calace Competition (Italy 07), The Monart Center of the Arts competitions (06), the Serni Foundation Competitions, the Chais Foundation and the America-Israel Foundation Scholarships.

Despite his young age, he have already performed all over Europe, the U.S, the Middle East and the Far East with different ensembles and orchestras and in the most important halls and festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Lucerne Festival, The Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms in London, La Scala in Milano, the golden Musikverein of Vienna, Koelner Filharmoni, Tivoli Hall in Kopenhagen, Ravello Festival in Italy, and many more.

Sariel have conducted the Israeli Sinfonietta Beer Sheva and the Israeli Plectrum Orchestra has played soloist with the Providence Mandolin Orchestra as well as with most of the orchestras in Israel, among them are the Jerusalem Radio Symphony, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, The Israeli Simfonietta Beer Sheva and the Ashdod Symphony. He has recorded for labels as Albany Records (U.S) and gave master classes in prestigious schools such as Trinity College (London).

Alon Sariel's playing can be heard on 'Kol HaMusica' the Israeli Classical Music radio station, as well as on WQXR in New York among others. Sariel was invited by Jeunesses Musicales to take part in Ethno Cyprus and by Mestro Arie Vardi to record a recital for the Israeli Television. He collaborates with artists such as the Trumpet artist Marcus Stockhausen, he have founded the Israeli Early Music Project with whom he was sent to study at the at the Brussels Royal Conservatory on a full scholarship and since summer 07 he is also a member of the West Eastern Divan conducted by maestro Daniel Barenboim

  • This is an amazing performance! I'm surprised you are able to keep up to speed! I recently found a transcription of the rest of the sonatas for solo guitar. If anyone is interested you can buy it off itunes for 10 bucks or so. Unfortunately it doesn't include the ballade or the sixth sonata, but still incredible.
