i would of loved to be a crew chief back then seems like there is hardly any relationship between the pilot and ground crew today... as soon as i had them the forms its thanks for the jet and bye...
@soonernation69 Hartmann flew the 109 which was a 1933 design and in fact obsolete at the end of the war, the Russian flew P39's (hand me downs from the Us Army Aircorps, among other Russian built types like Yaks and Lavochkins) the Russian fighter pilots were no sloughes and there were many aces... The Americans paid a heavy price in the beginning of the Korean war when the Mig15 appeared !!!
116 missions. Interesting number. Comparism: Many German pilots flew around 1000- 1500 missions, Rudel (but he wasn't a figther pilot) more then 3.500. The difference: According what old German Veteran tell it didn't take long to find oneself in a combat, at the end of the war mostly totally outnumbered. Amazing how they survived all the years in combat.
With this kind of interviews they document many interesting prodedures, occurrences and facts for the after-world. Thanks to all participants.
top scorer wqs Eric Hartmann (352 kills) but that does not mean that he was the best fighter pilot.. he flew more missions (>1000 !) and survived and that is all
what it is about. (the Russians put him in jail for 10 years... thats how they handled
POW's) the Americans snatched Werner von Braun's team away and the rest is history !
I had the distinct honor of meeting this man at a Legends of Airpower gathering with the Commemorative Air Force, in Mesa Az. As he talked and shared his exploits, the years melted away, and it was like he was a young man again, sitting in the cockpit of his P-51. It was a singular pleasure to have a chance to sit and hear him speak across the table. Thank you and God Bless you Bud!!
@Mattebubben , yeah I know, but as Gunther Rall said once: The Americans had to fly 8 Hours to maybe find a target, while the germans 7 or 8min to find hundreds of russians, They flew and Fought in what is called a Traget Rich Enviroment. And flew hundreds od Missions. But Any way they survived and many of the high scoring German Aces Didn't.
Amazing Video and Pilot, Bud Anderson is one of the best pilots that flew over germany in ww2, For me his book To Fly and Fight: Memoirs of a Triple Ace was the first I've ever read, and was really emotional to be sitting in my room reading about those great aerial battles that took place long time ago, it was like being in the cockpit with BUD.
