It was Manchester Uniteds most complete performance of the season so far. It featured Cristiano Ronaldos first goal since his comeback and a moment of sublime skill from Ryan Giggs, but this was a night that will be recalled for one abysmal tackle.

Emanuel Pogatetzs two-footed lunge saw Uniteds young Brazilian midfielder, Rodrigo Possebon, carried off on a stretcher with a suspected broken leg. As his player was receiving oxygen on the pitch — treatment that helped to produce nine minutes of stoppage time — Sir Alex Ferguson was involved in an angry confrontation with Colin Cooper, the Middlesbrough assistant manager.

The kid was making his first-team debut and it is horrendous, the United manager said. ''For the next 10 minutes everyone was numb about it and it killed the momentum of the game. The thing about these challenges is that the opponent always claims he is innocent. Thats what I couldnt understand. He [Pogatetz] should have walked straight off.

One member of their bench was on his feet screaming that it was never a sending-off, saying there was nothing wrong with the tackle. I have to say that Gareth Southgate was very good — he understood the gravity of the offence and he was very apologetic. But it was a terrible tackle. I have seen it on video and I dont want to see it again.

United have long used the League Cup to blood young players but it was the 34-year-old Ryan Giggs — who dazzled as a teenager when United overcome Middlesbrough in the 1992 semi-final — who provided the nights decisive moment, 13 minutes after Pogatetzs dismissal. He seized on a long punt upfield that Chris Riggott failed to control and curled his shot beautifully into the Stretford End net. But for David Wheater heading off the line, he would have had a second moments later, although United deservedly registered a third in injury-time when another defensive error from Boro allowed Nani to stroke the ball home.

Ordinarily, Ronaldos first goal of the season would have stolen the headlines. In his programme notes, Ferguson said that he accepted that Ronaldo would eventually make his way to Spain but he had advised him that he should ensure he left a hero like Eric Cantona.

If you wanted to describe a typical Ronaldo goal, you might imagine a late-dipping free-kick or an outrageous back-heel. In fact, he more regularly scores with the kind of muscular header he produced after 25 minutes when rising to meet Giggs corner.

This season Middlesbrough have perfected the dangerous art of playing well and losing. Last night they were simply outplayed. Their equaliser, which arrived when Adam Johnson swung his boot at Nemanja Vidics clearance, astonished virtually everyone present. Not that the crowd was as big as expected.

Last seasons tie against Coventry, which ended in a 2-0 defeat, drew 74,055. But it was then compulsory for season-ticket holders to buy tickets for Carling Cup games.

  • You "don't care a shit" if Man Utd are successful? Then why are you so angry? Oh, that's right, because YOU'RE JEALOUS.

Ronaldo is the only pussy at Man Utd, and even he doesn't cry on the pitch like your beloved John Terry.

  • I'm not a fan of either Man city or Utd but who's "the real" Manchester Team now.

    1-6 ---- says it all...

  • What is with all the hate for Man United and the love for Pogatetz?

I'm a fan of the REAL Manchester team (United, duh), and although I didn't see it, this was an awful tackle and ruled Possebon out for like nine months. That cheat Pigatetz deserved a red card so FUCK off...

  • I've written an article about tackles like this on my football blog, 'MoronsTalkAbout Football' on WordPress. I argue that English players are more likely than foreign players to make violent tackles in the Premier League, and that it is bad for the development of skilful English players. Any readers welcomed. Search moronstalkaboutfootball as one word on Google
