1981, transiting from West Germany to East Germany (DDR) @ Autobahn Hirschberg Crossing,
First they checked your entry Visa and Passports, then you had to exchange hard West D Mark for Aluminium chips East Mark,
Then the unmistakable impression was of drastically changing from a World of Technicolor into another one of living in a Black and White Movie!

Years ago, before the fall of the Wall, I visitied West and East Berlin both.
Both times I entered East Berlin, it was an intimidating and eery feeling walking from the West to East. East Berlin was interesting to visit, but I found it very oppressive. I felt sad for its people stuck in that regime who had to live there.

@jollygreenspartan There was rarely a check on arrival in West Berlin. No-one once looked at my documents.

@benjathome YOU HAD TO TRAVEL THE 120 MILES FROM WEST GERMANY THROUGH EAST GERMANY TO GET TO BERLIN WHICH WAS IN EASTERN GERMANY. BERLIN WAS ENCLOSED BY THE WALL. YOU ENTERED EACH OF THE ALLIED SECTORS OF BERLIN BY EACH SECTORS ENTRY ROAD.

I WAS IN BERLIN IN 1979. I TOOK PICTURES OVER THE WALL AT BRANAUER STRASSE IN THE FRENCH SECTOR. THE CHURCH OF THE RECONCILIATION WAS TO THE LEFT OF THE PLATFORM I STOOD ON TO TAKE THE PICTURES OF THE GUARDS ACROSS THE OTHER SIDE IN EAST BERLIN.
