@Cam3leon That's what happened. Robotnik told Knuckles that while He was the Emerald's Protector, Sonic was the Emerald Thief and that's why Knuckles sided with Eggman during the Sonic 3 game. If he figured out it was the other way around, he would have more than likely hidden the Master Emerald in one of the many special warp zones so eggman couldn't get it

Seeing that mural again made me think...what if Knux interpreted Sonic as the Emerald thief from that prophecy? As opposed to taking it back from Robotnik? I mean yeah he was lied to, but maybe the mural backed it up...
