They do come up for sale occasionally on ebay. But I lucked out on this one. A lady who was advertising a phonograph for sale on craigslist, emailed me back that she also had a little dancing phonograph toy for sale. When I found out it was an original Ragtime Rastus, we sealed the deal. Who says you can't feel like you are 10 years old again. Just attach the device to your crank phonograph, put on an early jazz instrumental or a Ragtime number, then watch this little guy dance, and you're there

The mechanical device underneath the dancing platform attaches snugly to the spindle of the phonograph, and when you turn on the phonograph the circular motion powers the mechanism inside to force the flexible rod attached to Rastus into an up and down motion, and since the legs, arms and feet are jointed and balanced, it gives us the fascinating appearance of Rastus really strutting his stuff to the music, making a variety of steps and motions and spins.
