The shift linkage controls the detent that is attached to the shift drum that moves the shift forks that moves the slider gears which are splined on to the countershaft and mainshaft that in turn engage or disengage the freewheeling gears and the fixed gears. That is how a constant mesh transmission works.

This video is absolutely amazing. I have had a Z50A, XR70, XR200 and XR500 (not all 3 speeds obviously) and I have never really known for sure what kind of magic was happening in there. Thank you for putting the time into explaining these awesome transmissions! (Even if it was 3 years ago!)

Hello,
I have a 1997 Honda Z50R. It has the three up three speed transmission. But just recently first get makes a really loud clicking sound. But only third gear. I'm just curious as to what that is and am wondering if you would happen to have any idea to what it is? I'm assuming a tooth is broken or damaged? I was also wondering how much you think just the replacement part would cost?
If you could help me that would be great. Thank you very much!!

i love bikes, but my 5th gear just dropped out of my bottom!
ok i have a honda z50rp idk if this video pertains to but heres whats going wrong, i think my bike is stuck in 3 gear because when i press down on it, it stops and clicks jus like in the video but when i try to put it in 2, 1, or even neutral its not shifting. its like its not catching and shifting down.
oh and dont you have to be in neutral to even start it?

The basic principle is the same. Check that the detent arm (spring loaded lever with the wheel that rides the star) is in place and not cranked. You might have really worn shift pins also but not likely. Yes you can start in gear but since the kickstart goes through the transmission, it will move. It will only move while you are kicking though, once it starts, the centrifugal clutch will keep it from moving.

Just like the engines of the 60's except back then, the shift drum was one piece. The shift forks used to wear out pretty often. When you split the cases you had to lift the ratchet away from the drum to allow the cases to come apart.

Drum is still one piece, on the drum in this video, and the current Honda 50's.

But you showed the part that keeps the ratchet arm in place as a bolt on. It used to be part of the drum and not removable. I broke one learning...

Oh, interesting. I guess I don't know about bikes that old. Thanks for letting me know.
