I can't get the layers box to show up? Any suggestions?

@BreezyKiss Hmm, I've never had an issue with that before. The only two things I can think to try are:

1.) Click the "Windows" drop down box and select "Layers" (it's under Windows->Dockable Dialogs on my version of GIMP).

2.) If you still don't see it, it could already be open and just hidden/obscure. Check all your open panels (like channels, paths, etc.) and try to find the tab with the paper icon on it (that's layers).

how do you chop the picture so that it shows up as individual pictures for the banner section on FB?

@Uberboy07 I've never actually done that, but there are tools out there that you can use to do that automatically for you (just google it). You can also just find the size that you need and manually crop the image several time in different places to do that.
