  • I always say, if there was a half way decent referee in the ring when Tyson fought Douglas then Douglas would have been counted out in round 8 and that pathetic fluke of a boxer would never have been heavyweight champion!!!

  • I swear, when Douglas is on the mat, you can SEE him thinking "Who gives a damn, I've made enough from this fight to retire comfortably anyway".

  • @ares3030 - one other thing, it is possible that Douglas had Tyson's number anyway. Douglas could have faced Tyson in 1987 as he was beating Tony Tucker in their fight and then, inexplicably, stopped fighting. If he hadn't, maybe the course of heavyweight history would have been changed, stranger things have happened.

Also, did you know that, when the fight was stopped, one judged had Tyson ahead and another had him dead level. The third judge had Douglas a mile in front.

  • @BruceinFalkirk That i agree with, had tyson trained properly and took Douglas seriouly, we wouldn't be having this discussion. It was the right combination of a motivated, inshape Douglas against an out of shape tyson not taking him serious, that set the scene for an upset. I still think Douglas had a little help from the Ref but he does deserve credit for a fantastic performance.

  • @ares3030 - One other thing. Douglas fancied the job against Tyson and always thought he could beat him - he was in the peak of condition for that match.

On this particular night, he was woefully out of shape, ironically, the kind of shape Mike Tyson expected Douglas to show up in, in Tokyo.

  • @BruceinFalkirk Afriad so. The count was a long count, and simply repeating yourself will add nothing new to this discussion. Douglas did nothing wrong and did win the fight in the end, but if the referee had done his job properly, he might not have had the oportunity to knock Tyson out. At this point lets just agree to disagree.

  • @ares3030 - Afraid not. There was nothing out of the ordinary about the referee's count. Octavio Meyran was an experienced referee and knew what he was doing.

Mike Tyson lost the fight because he had his head punched in for several rounds and round 8 had the only significant punch he landed in it.

  • @BruceinFalkirk The Ref is the ultimate authority in the ring so i wouldnt have the fight overturned even if i could, i'm simply stating my opinion that the ref botched his job and possibly cost Tyson the fight. You are correct that Tyson recieved a long count, but he should have won the fight in the 8th so that it didn't come to that. Don King may have been dismissed as you dismissed the points i made, but whats popular isn't always the truth and the truth isn't always popular.

  • @ares3030 - The count was the same length for both Tyson and Douglas. Douglas was clearly listening to the count and you're more than 20 years too late.

Don King tried to overturn the result using the argument you made and was laughed out of town by the public.

  • @BruceinFalkirk Being awake and having your legs are two different things, most fighters who wait out a count, don't wait until the count of 8 or 9 to get up. Furthermore, most fighters that are waiting for an 8 count don't do it laying on their side as Douglas did, they do it on their knees or feet. He was in obvious trouble and barely got up, He needed that long count! You may think that explaination is "utter shite" but i think he might have benefitted from that long count.

  • @ares3030 - Utter shite. Douglas punched Tyson's head in throughout the fight and was awake and listening to the count when he was on the canvas.

Douglas deserved to win on the night.

  • tyson is a vegan now and animal rights activist.
