Severe Thunderstorm in Montreal - July 17th, 2010

As it is New Year's Day, I had wanted to share some footage of the strongest thunderstorm that we had during Spring-Summer 2010. This storm principally affected the eastern half of the island of Montreal, which we had intercepted as we traveled to the Greater Montreal area. Heavy rains, strong winds, small hail and intense lightning were the main concerns with this storm, and the torrential rains led to localized flooding. A couple, both in their 40s, were, unfortunately, struck by lightning while seeking shelter underneath a tree along Notre-Dame street that afternoon - the storms were similarly responsible for the death of a 25 year old man in Ontario, who had been struck by lightning while at a water park.

The first part of the video shows the thunderstorm towards the northeast, and you can see several CG (cloud to ground) lightning discharges in the distance. You can also frequently hear the winds, which are the inflow winds (some really good inflow) heading towards the storm's updraft region. Following the first section, the footage entails us driving towards the storm system - these next two sections really reveal the ominous nature of the particular thunderstorm. This storm also had a history of some mild rotation, but no tornado touchdowns.

I must apologize for that small annoyance (the centered tag) at the beginning of the first and second parts of the video - I used a software to remove the audio (due to excessive noise), but since it is non-activated, the output videos result in that added tag there. Fortunately, this tag only lasts for one minute into the videos, so pay it no mind. :)
