Spike Spencer's / Shinji Ikari's commentary on the Director's Cut finale of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion television series. We re-localized this video to use as the opening to the final part of our "Understanding Evangelion" panel series at Otakuthon 2011, "What are you, stupid?!". You can download a standalone version of this video, as well as all of the other material from our panels, at the Darkside Translations website (http://www.darksidetranslations.com).

Naturally, Spike proves that he deserves his nickname, "Frickin' Genius". In case you're wondering: this is a "Director's Cut" in the sense that Gendo Ikari, Maya Ibuki, and Shigeru Aoba were recast for the Director's Cut versions of Episodes 21' through 24', and each of the characters' lines for Episodes 25 and 26 were re-recorded for the sake of consistency.

  • Where the FUCK would I go???

  • @Mperce Outside. Remember that the series is an anti-escapist message. If you're spending way too much time with TV, anime, video games, manga, books, what have you, you're running away from reality.

A bit of escapism every now and then is a good thing. Relying on escapism to avoid the possibility of pain is not.

  • This is pretty much the only decent part of the dub.

  • @DSFARGEG00 Meh. Too each his own. Granted, the Rebuild dub is way better.

  • Wait, is this the official, or is this some sort of joke :P

    Anyways, good vid :D

  • @MangaDragon1991 Technically, it's both. It's an official outtake - you can find it in the 7-disc Platinum box set or the Limited Edition Holiday Special (sorry, but it's not in the 6-disc Platinum Complete thinpack). Just before the credits roll for the final episode, switch the audio to Track 4 to hear Shinji's Rant.

  • Congratulations!

Not necessarily. It's just a more accessible ending. We're so used to any given show's themes being relayed via the narrative that it's jarring when we see themes being explored any other way. Eva was among the first to examine the theme directly, and that resonated strongly with people suffering from depression that could only "see the forest for the trees". Anno and company received tons of letters praising this technique (the dub crew hand-waved these as "death threats").

  • This just made my life.

  • @crocen0 Watch end of eva it's a much better ending.
