TODAYSNETNEWS:02 March 2011 -- UNTV: United Nations, New York -- China's Ambassador Li Baodong who assumed the presidency of the Security Council this month briefed the press today (2 March) on the programme of work for the Council and commented on a variety of issues.

On the situation in Libya, he said that it must be resolved by peaceful means with its territorial integrity preserved. He stressed that the matter is of "tremendous importance to the region" and therefore the opinion of Arab and African countries must be respected.

Asked about China's position in support of the rights of protesters and its own human rights record, Li said that the reform process started in 1978 is ongoing and has "never stopped, even today, every day, is moving forward."

He candidly said that "nobody is perfect in the world" and added that China is open to learn from others and will "continue the reform."

On the situation in the Middle East, he said that United Nations (UN) resolutions are the basis to resolve the issue and China "always supports the Security Council to play its due role."

He expressed regret that a recent Security Council resolution on the Middle East was not adopted. He said that China was "very sorry about that."

The United States vetoed the resolution, which criticised Israeli settlement building.
