This raises an interesting point regarding censorship on youtube. With such a diverse user population, its clear that beliefs on what is "acceptable" will vary. What one may consider perfectly normal may be taboo or offensive to others. It is expected that the censorship will reflect the beliefs of the majority, which can be safe although limiting for the overall community. As a self-regulating body comprised of vastly different world views, reaching a singular solution is nearly impossible
It really is an interesting thing to look at, how censorship reflects of the youtube community and "western attitudes" as it is stated in the video. However, even if youtube itself is censored in certain "non western" countries, it definitly isnt only a western platform of expression. It would be interesting to know the differences of censorship between those cultures, and how does it blend.
Nice video! It's definitely a good idea to include some user perspectives on YouTube censorship in addition to describing the censorship itself. One question - would you consider the removal of videos that contain copyrighted content to be a form of censorship? Not sure I would, just curious.
I like this tour, especially the first half. Although the format does seem a little too similar to your proposal. Question: What about drugs on YouTube? You mentioned violence, sex and religion, but what about drugs? As far as main stream media, this topic is certainly included in what is censored. What about on YouTube?
Is there any way to determine the level of violence in a video that gets it banned? Have you discussed censorship of the "comments and responses" forum?
This project is looking really good so far. It's amazing the lengh people will go to push censorship rules. This definitely demonstrates that one can put up videos, if worded right, that are quite inappropriate.
I have a few questions I'd like to see addressed in your final presentation:
1. Who makes the rules and judgment calls regarding censorship on YouTube? I'd be really interested in knowing about this.
2. How has their censorship policy (or their execution of this policy) changed since they were purchased by Google? You reference YT's corporate overlords, but I'd like to see some real evidence that they've affected the site's policies.
This is a very interesting topic, and I think you did a good job showing us your research, but I am still unclear about what stance you are taking on YouTube's effectiveness in censoring videos. I think you are saying that YouTube does not censor the 'right' videos, or it doesn't censor enough, but it seems like you are also claiming that it censors too much in some cases. Hopefully it will be more clear in your final project.
I really like your focus for this project. It seems that you're covering traditionally, and in some ways, expected censored topics (sex/violence) as well as topics that have been censored for less understandable reasons (religious videos). Very interesting to see that these vids critiquing religion have been taken down, yet at the same time there's so many "teen sex" clips ignored by the censorship team.
