Demonstration organised by the National Federation of Cypriot Organisations - this is the beginning of the protest, assembling at the Embankment and marching past Parliament and Big Ben at the Palace of Westminister, and past Downing Street in Whitehall.
This "Rally for Cyprus" marks 33 years since the Turkish Invasion of the island of Cyprus. Turkey continues to keep its settlers and a 40,000 strong army in the territory it has occupied since the invasion in 1974 following a coup against President Makarios by the Greek junta which ruled Greece at that time. Marchers attending the Rally for Cyprus chant "Turkish Troops out of Cyprus" and call on the Brown Government in Britain to use its influence as a guarantor power to ensure that a solution is found that is acceptable to all the people of Cyprus. The European Union (EU) is called upon to use its influence during Turkey's accession negotiations to contribute to finding a just solution for Cyprus which respects the acquis communautaire and puts an end to Turkey's continuing human rights violations in Cyprus.
