When one sense is taken others improve.
when you are in the dark, and you cant see, your mind has to think about what is around you.
many people have Nyctophobia not because there afraid of the dark but because it is easier for your mind to wonder into unpleasant thoughts when you cannot see. and i find when you start thinking of 'scary' thoughts its very hard to stop.
