in 1979? Metallica weren't even formed then and apparently James Hatfield began using Explorers in 1984 ... by that time Edge's Explorerwas already beaten up and on 5 U2 albums.
This video only gives a brief glimpse into Edge's world. In other interviews he acknowledged, he was the first in IRELAND using an Explorer. I wouldn't judge this guy by just one interview.
He used to claim, he was actually after a Rickenbacker, not a Les Paul. I guess after 35 years these are mere little faux-pas.

I broke my headstock too.
Everyone was telling me that the guitar was 100% ruined forever even if I fixed it.
Thank god for this video.
I don't feel so bad about it now.

Yep from The Who, it cud be Peter Buck from REM but he is talking bout earlier guitarists because he mentions Keith Richards just before

I think it's townsend from
The Who aye , although I know he admires Peter Buck as well but he his talking about earlier guitarists because before he mentions Keith Richards

I've seen him play alongside jimmy page and jack white who are both excellent guitarists but the best and most original part of that showcase is when edge plays, there are loads of people and some you mention who play in similar ways to others, nobody has ever sounded like "The Edge", I think I read somewhere I think it was vai or satriani, I'm not sure which one that his favourite guitarist was Edge!!!

@bonolee07 Those artists have no necessity to belong to the mainstream music, just beacuse they have demonstrated their contribution to the music. It's pretty shameful to corroborate how they are even unknown for millions of people. Nevertheless, there´s no fair comparison between The Edge and the artists mentioned before in terms of accuracy, technique, skill, resources,precision,variety, quality, etc. I like a lot of U2´s songs, but I have to admit the Edge is a very limited artist
which pete is he talking about at 5:22? townsend?

@stopmonkey47452 I'm pretty certain it's Pete Townshend.

Obviously, he created an unique sound, no doubt about it. Anyhow, a huge difference between him and other top guitarrists around there, I think he is quite overrated musician.

@mgljimcmgl How can he be overrated? I don't think anyone has put Edge in direct comparison with any other guitarist. It's the sheer number of people liking the music and sounds he creates that make him a ranking guitarist. It would be a step forward if fellow musicians would stop measuring a great musician by his technical ability but instead concentrate on what is coming out of his amp.
Edge never competed in any other category than his own. That alone makes him a true artist in my book.
