Wasn't long after I got my shop built that I discovered that the whole-house fan in the ceiling can create a vortex. The building measures 24'x 32' and the fan is in the center of the ceiling. Now I can truthfully say that a tornado went through my shop if anyone calls it messy! I used a cup of flour to make the funnel visible. Only the finest particles make it to the fan and out the attic vent, and the heavier stuff just gets tossed around on the floor.

  • I hope that it is not a fake...!

  • @809380 Nope, not a fake. I have another video that shows the funnel even better.

  • you should film it with a couple of containers of dry ice placed around the outside of the vortex 'circle'. THAT would be amazing :)

  • @TroySundt - I didn't have a camera with me at the time, but I have done that with a few smokebombs. It was really cool! I'll have to do that again sometime and record it.

  • The fan is sucking air from the room and blowing it out the attic vent. The original idea was to have air circulation when it's hot.

  • It's simply a large (30") ceiling mounted "whole house" type fan - moves around 5000 cfm. It's mounted in the center of the ceiling and the air goes out an attic vent after it goes through the fan. If I had known it was going to do this I would have used right-hand doors to put a clockwise spin on the vortex to match the spin direction of the fan blades. Just before it reaches the blades, the funnel reverses direction to match the fan.

I want to try it with a few colored smoke bombs. :P
