FALMOUTH A Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter yesterday morning made a precautionary landing in Petersons Field in Falmouth after a helicopter warning light blinked on.

At 9:45 a.m., the helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod and its three-man crew landed without injury or damage in the farm field off Woods Hole Road, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Matthew Belson in Boston.

There were no reported injuries. Peterson Farm, which hosts about 40 field workers and a flock of sheep, is located approximately 5 miles south of the Coast Guard Air Station at Otis Air Base in Bourne, Massachusetts.

  • I work on HH-60G Pave Hawks and we once had to make an emergency landing due to hydraulic fluid loss at the tail. A friend of mine that is a Black Hawk pilot in the Army has lost tail rotor gearbox cowlings before. There are a lot of fasteners to hold the cowling on, but they can still pop off if the receptacles for the fasteners are worn out or someone didn't perform a good preflight inspection.

  • @jvn1111 Yep, the tail on the 60 is heavy, so they tilt the rotor over to provide lift, help it hover without over torquing the trans.

  • @jvn1111 The tail rotor is Canted 20 degrees to provide lift (2.5% of total lift during hover).

  • why the tail rotor tilt in angle like that ?
