Oscar Brown, Jr (October 10, 1926 May 29, 2005) was an American singer, songwriter, playwright, poet, and civil rights activist. His first major contribution to a recorded work was a collaboration with Max Roach, We Insist! - Freedom_Now, which was an early record celebrating the Black freedom movement in the United States. Columbia Records signed Oscar as a solo artist, who was already in his mid-30's and married with 5 children [1]. In 1960, he released his first LP, titled Sin and Soul recorded from June 20th to October 23rd 1960. The cover to the album included personal reviews by well known celebrities and Jazz musicians of the time, including Steve Allen, Lorraine Hansberry, Nat Hentoff, Dorothy Killgallen, Max Roach and Nina Simone (Nina would go on to use his lyrics for Work Song on her own cover of the song.)

  • Dont feel strange--just lucky. I was 20 yrs old when I heard Between Heaven and Hell by pure chance at some strangers apt. Opened up an awareness and sensitivity level that changed me forever. That was in 1965 and I've been listening him ever since. He was, indeed, an incredible writer and singer.
