There is at least one pretty important difference between the current Iranian leadership and the old USSR. While the USSR leaders didn't believe in the return of the hidden Mahdi there many hints that the current Iranian leadership does believe in its return. And as they say that he returns during the "one final apocalyptic battle" (-> Wikipedia). And no one can be certain whether they might launch a handful A-bombs against Israel in the hope to speed up the hidden Mahdi's return.
